W&W talk new single ‘OIIA OIIA (Spinning Cat)’, defining career moments and upcoming shows [Interview]

The name W&W is synonymous with EDM culture and lifestyle. Constantly on the cusp of what’s hot and happening, the extraordinary duo have achieved insurmountable success and influence over the course of their career. With major career milestones; such as constantly appearing in DJ Mag’s Top 25 DJ’s list, the rise of their Rave Culture imprint and consistent festival headline slots, along with a slew of hits, W&W’s artistry is unmatched.

In an exclusive interview with the Dutch duo, they reveal the inspiration behind their latest hit remix ‘OIIA OIIA (Spinning Cat)’, the importance of authenticity, and exciting new developments with their label Rave Culture

Hey W&W, welcome to YourEDM! We’re so excited to catch up with you.

Your forthcoming track, ‘OIIA OIIA (Spinning Cat)’, is inspired by the famous “spinning cat meme”. What about this meme caught your eye and made you want to turn it into a track?

We saw the cat meme on TikTok and found it extremely funny! After seeing it more and more and realized it was growing, we figured we should make a remix of it as the audio of the meme is actually quite a cool sound.

Fans lost their minds when you played the track at Insomniac’s Countdown NYE, and the video of your performance has garnered over 90 million views across platforms. When creating the track did you have any idea it would have this impact?

Not at all! We just made it because we thought it would be a fun moment to bring the cat to a big screen and play the track at a show. We dropped the song at Countdown in LA during New Years Eve, where the crowd went absolutely wild when the cat came on the screen. They screamed so loud! Then we posted the clip on TikTok, we were absolutely blown away by the response! Once we saw the impact, we decided we could release it and help send the proceeds to Ethel (the cat being used in the meme), and the shelter she came from, the Cat Welfare Association. So it ended up being for a great cause!

The W&W brand has evolved significantly since you started out. Can you tell us how your brand has developed in recent years, and share your thoughts on what makes a brand stand out in the music industry?

We always try to move forward and keep up with new developments in music production and trends, whilst keeping our core values in our music. Over the years we have always liked and made euphoric and energetic music, whatever genre you might label it. A brand stands out when it’s different from the rest, and we believe that one way you can do this is by being your authentic self. People also feel that and connect with it more easily. Everything we do, we do because we like it and have an affection with it!

Your production quality is known for being incredibly polished. How much time do you typically spend on the intricacies of a track before you’re satisfied with it?

That really depends on the track and the process. Some music we make relatively fast and other songs take forever. But no matter what track it is that we’re working on, we always try to give it a bit of a special touch and smooth out the finishing details.

Your record label Rave Culture has garnered immense success since its inception in 2018. It’s also a community driven imprint that focuses on fashion and the EDM lifestyle, what sparked the decision to take this direction instead of a more conventional approach?

Rave Culture was inspired by the need to bring all facets of dance music culture under one umbrella. It’s inception was natural and it felt more like a family, a culture than just a record label, so it was only a natural step for us to make it more of a lifestyle brand than just music. The shop has been closed for a little now, but we’ve been working on some really sick new designs and fans can expect to see a whole new look for 2025.

What role do music festivals like Tomorrowland, Ultra, and EDC play in your career? How has performing on these massive stages evolved for you over time?

Of course these festivals have been and still are very important for us, and also the entire dance music scene. The amount of people that visit these festivals makes them an opportunity for artists to reach people that you hope to touch with your music. It’s been really great to play these festivals for so many years and garner more and more songs that people love to singalong to. It never fails to amaze us how much energy these crowds have and how much they love dance music.

With a career spanning almost two decades, looking back, what do you feel has been the most defining moment in your career so far?

It has to be the fact that we are still here, doing what we love most and receiving so much positive energy from people around the world. Whether it’s at shows or people sending us messages from where they live with stories of what our music means to them, that is what makes this really really special for us!

Lastly, what can your fans expect next from W&W? Do you have any upcoming releases or shows that you’re particularly excited about?

We have an insane amount of music that’s coming up, in a lot of different styles. Lately we have been working on a lot with new sounds, trying to improve and reinvent ourselves with fresh yet signature directions. We plan to start testing these tracks in our upcoming sets! At the beginning of February we’re playing as NWYR at the Dreamstate Festivals in Australia, really looking forward to that. We have an epic W&W show coming to the Brooklyn Hangar in NYC on February 22, as well as playing in Amsterdam for Don’t Let Daddy Know on March 1.  We also can’t wait for Tomorrowland Winter in a few weeks where we will play two special sets as NWYR and W&W!
