In the words of Frodo Baggins, “It’s done.” Ever since Monstercat released their 25th compilation Threshold, the label has used each compilation album cover to tell a story of conflict between the Monstercat and the “evil cat.” With the appropriately-titled Finale, the story has finally come to an end, with Monstercat standing tall in triumph.
I might be crazy, but I’m sensing some symbolism here. Finale features – not one, but – two charity releases, with the label teaming up with both BC Children’s Hospital and Ditch the Label. The latter of the two carries the mission of fighting worldwide bullying and prejudice. Could this symbolically be the “evil” Monstercat has been battling all along? Has he finally won?
Theories aside, Monstercat has once again crafted an album worthy of high recognition. Just one day into the Finale‘s release and the compilation is already charting #1 on iTunes’ dance chart, and is within the top 30 overall. If you’ve never bought a Monstercat compilation, definitely consider making Finale your first. Not only will you be directly supporting two charities, but 40+ producers, vocalists and songwriters as well.
Below, we have picked our five favorite tracks from the album. We would encourage you to listen to the whole thing yourself and let us know what your favorites are in the comment section below!
nanobii – Chipland
After a two-year hiatus with Monstercat, nanobii‘s return to the label was anything but disappointing. Fueled by electric guitar and purely emotional melodies, “Chipland” is easily one of the best Monstercat has ever pushed out in the happy hardcore genre.
Notaker – Shimmer
Notaker‘s third release with Monstercat left my mouth agape, longing for more. Aspiring producers, take note: THIS is how it’s done. Notaker perfectly exemplifies exactly what it means to have dreams come come to life. “Shimmer” is a beautiful blend of synthwave and indie dance, with some glitch elements to add some icing to the cake. It’s euphoric perfection, simply said.
PYLOT – Shadowtask
PYLOT‘s entire debut EP Shadowtask was insanely good, but the EP’s closer/title track was the cherry on top. “Shadowtask” packs some serious heat in just over three minutes with its driving melody, backed by memorable Daft Punk-inspired vocals.
Gareth Emery & Standerwick – Saving Light feat. HALIENE
There was no way we were going to miss this one. Not only does “Saving Light” encapsulate everything that makes trance great (like its uplifting melody and stunning vocals), but it recently became the first trance song in over five years to claim a Beatport #1. That’s absolutely huge.
Grant – Constellations feat. Jessi Mason
As proven before with the psychedelic “Wake Up,” Grant & Jessi Mason are a power duo when they combine forces. “Constellations” is no exception to this rule. The track is equally bright and beautiful as it is creative. Definitely don’t skim over this one, “Constellations” has endless layers to peel back and dissect. More importantly, the track is simply one of the most enjoyable works Monstercat has put out in recent months.
